THEME 8: PUBLIC HEALTH

There is a strong awareness within the water sector that it plays a significant role in public health, both directly and indirectly. Most evident in the past has been the health benefits of quality services for drinking water and sewerage to customers, but there is growing evidence that water businesses can be a lead player with other partners to improve regional public health.  What action has been taken to secure the future health of people in Australia and overseas? What can be identified as future actions required?

  • Addressing disadvantage
  • Health Based Targets: examples of implementation
  • Emerging contaminants: separating evidence from speculation
  • Responding to incidents and emergencies
  • Fit-for-purpose water supply
  • Recreational access to drinking water reservoirs
  • Risk assessment for protozoa and viruses in drinking water and recycled water
  • Tap water as a beverage of choice
  • Water’s role in place-based approaches to development
  • How can adoption and implementation of World Health Organisation drinking water standards improve the quality of life in developing countries?
